Below are some of our major milestones and historical events.

  • 1934 Establishment of Fiji Native Teachers Association (FNTA) with 20 members 
  • 1948 Change of name from FNTA to Fijian Teachers Association
  • 1960 Celebration of FTA Silver Jubliee at Albert Park opened by Acting Governor, His Excellency P.D. MacDonald 
  • 1961 Registration of FTA as a Trade Union 
  • 1969 Submission to Fiji Education Commission 
  • 1970 Affiliation to the World Confederation of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP) 
  • 1973 Purchase property at 68 Knollys Street from Mrs Ryder 
  • 1973 Succesfully negotiated Teacher's Job Evaluation
  • 1973 Established Fijian Teachers Association Credit Union (FTACU) 
  • 1974 Established Fijian Teachers Association Welfare Scheme
  • 1976 Organised joint Pacific Regional Seminar on Leadership on FTA/FTU/WCOTP at Nasinu Teachers College
  • 1978 Launched Ratu Sukuna Foundation Fund by Minister of Fijian Affairs, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau
  • 1979 Laying of foundation stone of FTA Education House by Governer General, Ratu Sir George Cakobau 
  • 1981 Establishment of the Council of the South Pacific Teachers Organisation (CSPTO)
  • 1982 Established the Fiji Teachers Confederation (FTC) with Fiji Teachers Union (FTU)
  • 1983 Affiliation to the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) 
  • 1983 Purchased property adjacent to Peninsula Hotel for FTACU
  • 1984 Golden Jubilee Celebration at Natabua High School 
  • 1984 Judicial review of Nicol & Hurst Award by FTC 
  • 1984 Marched through Suva with FTU to reject Volunteer Service Scheme. Arbitrator, Prof John Young declared the scheme null and void
  • 1985 Ammended FTA constitution to allow for employment of full time General Secretary 
  • 1985 Teachers went on strike after re-introduction of Volunteer Service Scheme.
  • 1988 Establishment of the Retired Fijian Teachers Association (RFTA) as a branch 
  • 2011 Completion of the contruction of the Naivakananumi Apartment
